Cable networks will commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks next week with several new documentaries and re-airings of past specials.
This Sunday, Smithsonian Channel will debut 9-11: The Heartland Tapes, which recaptures the day’s events through actual news reports and other media from outside New York and Washington, D.C., network officials said.
CNN Sunday will re-air its original documentary, The Flag, which examines what happened to the tattered flag raised on the site of the World Trade Center the day of the attacks. The special premiered on the news network Sept. 4.
Fox News Channel on Wednesday (Sept. 11) will present live coverage of this year’s events commemorating 9/11 with Jonathan Hunt and Rick Leventhal reporting live from Ground Zero in New York. Additionally, 9/11 As It Happened, a video compilation of footage taken that day, will be presented on FOX & Friends (6-9 a.m. ET) that morning. FNC will also be observing the four moments of silence to honor the victims of 9/11.
Tuesday (Sept. 10), Animal Planet will air Hero Dogs of 9/11, a one-hour documentary that pays tribute to three survivors of the 9/11 attacks and to more than 300 search-and-rescue dogs and workers that traveled to Ground Zero to help during the crisis and aftermath.
Also on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1 will air Being: The Finest, an episode of that documentary series that profiles the New York City Police Department football team. Originally slated to air in January 2014, the show now is part of a Sept. 10 lineup that leads into the FS1 coverage of the 41st Fun City Bowl, pitting the NYPD football team against that of the Fire Department of New York.
On Sept. 11, Destination America will relive the events of Sept. 11 through the eyes of first responders in a special Answering The Call: Ground Zero’s Volunteers. Narrated by Kathleen Turner, the special commemorates those who put their own lives in danger in order to save others, as well as those who lost their lives in the attack.
Also that day, Science Channel (like Animal Planet and Destination America, part of Discovery Communications) will re-air the six-part, Steven Spielberg-produced documentary Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero (pictured) in its entirety beginning at 5 p.m., according to network officials.
A+E Networks outlet H2 will premiere 9/11: Relics From The Wreckage, a 30-minute special airing commercial-free on H2 at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Emmy-nominated short-form program showcases five objects being placed in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
History will encore the Emmy-winning 102 Minutes That Changed America special at 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 11, also presented without commercials. The special uses amateur and professional footage, woven together without narration or commentary, to record that historic morning and to provide an immersive, emotional experience.
Other 9/11 television programming includes encores of: 9/11 State of Emergency (8 p.m. Tuesday on H2); Grounded On 9/11 (10:30 p.m. Tuesday on H2); The Man Who Predicted 9/11 (8 p.m. Wednesday on History); and The Miracle Of Stairway B (11 p.m. Wednesday on History).
National Geographic Channel has a range of 9/11 specials lined up over three days, including, on Sunday, Sept. 8 (times are ET/PT): Stopping the Second 9/11 at noon; 9/11: The Firemen’s Story at 2 p.m.; George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview at 3 p.m. ; Witness: DC 9/11 at 4 p.m.; 9/11: Voices from the Air at 5 p.m.; 9/11: Where Were You? at 6 p.m.; Inside 9/11: War on America at 7 p.m. and Inside 9/11: Zero Hour at 9 p.m.
On Monday, Sept. 9, Nat Geo will air Inside the Green Berets at 8 p.m. and SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden at 9 p.m.
And on Wednesday, Sept. 11, Nat Geo has slated: 9/11: Voices from the Air at 7 p.m.; George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview at 8 p.m.; 9/11: Where Were You? at 9 p.m. and Witness: DC 9/11 at 10 p.m.
